Waving is a song that I wrote about a friend I have who was not very mentally well and was closing off themself to me, not talking and drinking excessively.

It’s about wanting to help someone who needs help but doesn’t want it. The title line “a hand waving from the tide” is inspired by a poem by Stevie Smith entitled “Not Waving but Drowning”, about how a soon to be dead man’s cries for help and thrashing in the water drowning was mistaken by onlookers as waving. In this case, no one can clearly tell that they are drowning too, but I do, and melancholic vocals and searing guitar tones emphasise on the ache I have towards my friend’s situation.

The song was all recorded in my bedroom and my drummer’s granny flat, using an old distorted condenser mic for the guitars, a Rode NT1A for vocals, a laptop mic and a Shure SM-58 for the drums and a direct line in for bass. I produced it myself too from home. Its just musicians on a budget making the most of what they have, giving it a raw, blown out, lo-fi garage sound, but having a new mic for the vocals and drums refines the recording a bit more than previous recordings of songs. (my producing skills got better too lol)
